... you are amazed how many nations left their tracks...
... Caribs, Englishmen, Courlanders, people from the Netherlands, France and Sweden settled or tried to settle in Tobago. Today there are 50,000 people living in Tobago. Most of them are descendants of African slaves who had been deported to Tobago mainly in the 17th and 18th century.

Different indio-tribes had been living in the southern Caribbean since 4000 b.C. Tracks and fossil records indicate that Tobago was settled by martial Caribs and large parts of Trinidad by the peaceful Arawaks.

Are there still Caribs in Tobago?

Not really!
The "discovery" of the Caribbean by Columbus lead to a nearly complete extermination of the original inhabitants. Some Tobagonians are still partly descendants of Caribs...

For centuries many European rulers were fighting for the posession of Tobago. However, several attempts of different European nations to settle in Tobago during the 17th and 18th century did't last.

The cultivation of sugar cane, cotton and ginger by British farmers is reported since 1762...
... the British build Fort King George on a hilltop overlooking Scarborough for defending their control over Tobago...
... nevertheless French troops conquer Tobago in 1781 and their people begin to settle...
... in 1793 Tobago is conquered again by the British. By this time, about 15,000 people were living on the island, including 14,000 African slaves...
... Tobago was awarded to Napoleon in 1802...
... just one year after it becomes British again - for the next one and a half centuries, until the independence of Trinidad and Tobago in 1962.
Tobago produces sugar and cotton...
... plantation owners and traders become rich...
... slavery is ablolished by the British government in 1834...

But then...

Former slaves leave Tobago to go to Trinidad...
... cocoa and coconut is replacing sugar cane....
... sales problems of the agricultural products lead to riots...
... in 1897 Trinidad and Tobago are united to one British colony...
... in 1962 Trinidad and Tobago becomes independent...
... in 1963 Hurricane Flora destroys most of the plantations...

The tourism sector becomes the biggest branch of industry in Tobago...
... many Americans and Europeans own property in Tobago or visite the island for a holiday...
